August 18 – Isafjordur

Last night, we left Reykjavik and sailed north along the western coast of Iceland. The waves were approaching three meters in height, which gave the ship a distinct rocking motion. Thankfully no one in our group got seasick.

Our port of call is Isafjordur.  This is small fishing village with approximately the same population as our village of Port Stanley, but in a much more condensed area. The town is bordered by a dormant volcano on one side of the inlet and steep mountains on the other side.

It was shock to wake up and see snow on the top of the mountains as it apparently snowed the night before.

The shore excursions from this port didn’t interest us, so we decided to take a walk through the village. Given that it is Sunday, the only stores open were souvenir shops and a grocery store.

During our walk it rained. My shoes have lost their waterproofing and it took no time at all before my feet were soaked. When I explained my predicament while asking directions to a pharmacy, a kindly clerk told us to go the grocery store and buy potato flour. She said that is what she used on her kid’s wet boots to dry them out. It sort of worked, but the shoes still smell gross.

For dinner tonight I had duck and Marg had lamb. Marg and Trudy have alerted the staff that they would like gluten free menus and tonight’s dessert was a deep chocolate fudge pie. They’re hoping for apple pie tomorrow.

The stage show was a magician named James Cielen. He hails from Winnipeg and has performed in Vegas for many years. The show was very entertaining, but I always love magic shows.
